thoughts du jour
i am leaving for bonnaroo tomorrow.  in prepartion:
1) where can i go and buy rainboots?  like these, or these?  i don't have time for www ordering
2) any recommendations for an audiobook brian meares and i would both enjoy whilst driving 209384 to bonnaroo?  brian is not what you'd call a 'reader'.  he read that vegas blackjack book about the MIT kids who counted cards... and i think that may be it?
3) why do i think this year will be different than the last attempts at me doing bonnaroo?

My husband and I recently listened to and LOVED 'Rocket Boys'. It's about these kids from a coal mining town in West Virginia that fly rockets inspired by the author's (a NASA scientist) childhood. I still think about the story time and again. It has really stayed with me...

  6. Target had cute Wellies the other day, Walmart has pretty good knock off Hunter boots.

As for books, go for some David Sedaris, he's always there for a good laugh, and the short stories should keep a non-reader semi-entertained

  7. I agree with David Sedaris. He is absolutey hilarious! "Me Talk Prety One Day" is my favorite. His sister Amy is fabulous too! Have fun at Bonaroo... good times will be had!

  9. I'm with Liz- Walmart for the boots.

In regards to stripes du jour- it would be great if you did an online class about painting furniture.

Have fun, can't wait to see this years picture update upon your return!

  13. Jealous you're going to bonnaroo. See Dr. Dog if you can. Love them. Also, Conan O'Brien's opening act Reggie Watts is genius.

As for audio, Sedaris is perfect. Other nonfiction options: Chelsea Handler (boozing and slutting) Pollan (healthy eating), Gladwell (trend hopping). 'The Big Short' by Michael Lewis is supposed to be great, even for non-financial types (like me). Gladwell gives him big props on audible.com.

  16. LOVE my Hunter wellies and I wouldn't part with them for anything. Well, maybe that's not true BUT, I did see a knock-off version at WallyWorld. And Target always has a nice selection. I'm so jealous that you're going to Bonaroo!

  18. Have so much fun!! My little brother is skipping his college graduation to go. I'm jealous!

My husband isn't much of a reader either, but we've listened to all of the Malcolm Gladwell books together. They're all good, but I think the most recent, Outliers, was both of our favorites. I also had success in getting him hooked on John Green (starting with Looking for Alaska). Oh, or maybe you can get The Happiness Hypothesis, or some other positive psychology book. That stuff is so interesting, and definitely relevant to anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit.

I think I may be the only person in the world that couldn't get into Me Talk Pretty One Day, but that was many years ago (as in, the-audio-book-was-cassette-tapes years ago). And I think I remember not liking his voice.

You could also do podcasts instead. Maybe This American Life? That way you can just "next" the ones that don't interest you both.

  19. Yep, you can find the Hunter Wellies at Nordstrom in stock most of the time. Was just introduced to your blog and I'm loving it! I'm your neighbor (Durham) so thought I'd say hi!

  20. Hope you are having tons of fun. I agree with all the Sedaris and Gladwell recommendations, but I have to add The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. When I read it, I actually thought of you and Rowdy. Also, my husband and dad both enjoyed reading it.
