Have a great time in NY at the gift show but come with a plan - it's overwhelming! I go in most years to shop the kids section for my store and even that tiny section can take forever. Part of my problem is that I get sidetracked by all the cool things I want and have to forcibly make myself focus on stuffed animals only:)

I LOVE that book. I even received that exact edition (with the Coralie Bickford Smith cover) for Christmas. Can't wait to see the display!

Hi Jamie,
I have been following your blog for quite some time now and wanted to ask you something, I am considering opening up my own shop here in California,I am about to sign a lease and I am petrified to DEATH!! I was wondering if you could impart some words of wisdom on this topic, and I am sorry I didn't write something that pertains to your topic, but omg, I am just so jittery at the prospect of complete failure and destitution.

You are going to have so much fun at the NY show. Wear walkin' shoes...but not ugly ones.

Mary Beth is right. It is so easy to get sidetracked. Staying focused is important. Ask if there are any show specials if you're placing an order. Sometimes, it's good to wait and place your order later since many times products aren't available for immediate ship. Ordering after the show will also prevent you from making costly buying mistakes. I'm sure you knew this already.

Take a lot of business cards, too. You'll be giving them out to get catalogs from vendors.

I haven't been in years, but I'd start at Accent on Design and also head to the piers where often smaller, cool emerging companies might be exhibiting.

Hey, received that book off my Wishlist, too! Think my read of it in high school was enough, though! ;)

Jamie,

I'm f-ing jealous, I want to go to the gift show! Please take mega-loads of pictures and do like a 15 part series of posts on every square inch of the show. I'm right on top of that Rose!

Jamie - I worked in a boutique on Melrose in LA about 2 years ago and died when I got to do the Valentine's display. I also went to the NYC gift market and actually cried at how much I loved it. You will not be disappointed. San Fran was fun, too.
I wish I could do it again- hopefully one day!
(Lucitebox is right about cute shoes) Have fun!

I’ve been going to Gift Show for years & will be going this weekend too…

My tips:

1) Find the lady that makes crepes in the back of the Javits for lunch – all the other food, well, just sucks.

2) Consider checking out the showrooms at 7W (www.7wnewyork.com) usually it’s much less stressful going there (there’s always less crowds) then trying to get help at a crazy packed booth at the Javits i.e. Two’s Company’s booth…trust me, you’ll see. On Saturday night, they’ll serve free booze too which is always a good thing! :)

Enjoy your first show!

Funny quote, because I decided to fill my apothecary jars this weekend with the most common things. One holds 30 white taper candles so that they are at the ready whenever I need to refill my mercury glass candlesticks, and the other holds replacement white globe lightbulbs (the ping pong ball sized ones). I love that they are all white and two very different forms of lighting, and two very common things that are usually hidden! Very interesting...and have fun at the show!

Take a rolly suitcase for all the catalogs you will acquire at the show.

Have fun!
