imagining if.

when i imagine my family in the backyard, gathered around our fire pit, sitting on ikea chairs, roasting marshmallows, it looks sort of like this. well mostly exactly like this.

i'm guessing you have to take the ikea chairs in when weather is inclement? anyone have ideas on this?

I imagine you could just purchase some covers for them? p.s. The Burberry throw she's wearing is darling!

You'd totally have to get your pup to wear his sweater all preppy style too.

Inclement weather is the exact reason why I haven't purchased those chairs. I don't think they'd stand up to rain well...
(but I still want them!)

I always just assume those people live in California, where it never rains all summer long, but you need a fire at night.

I do love them though.

Of course, just this very day I put a cotton rug on my exposed back deck, just 'cause I'm sick of looking at the boards. I plan to roll it up in case of rain, which in Georgia, should be along any minute.

If you've got the $$ and if you can find a style you like, there are all-weather wicker pieces. Not sure if I've ever seen them outside Restoration Hardware's catalogue (!) but you never have to take them inside.

We have the Ikea pouf things, but not the chairs. They are currently living inside until our porch is painted, but I will let you know how well they hold up against the elements. They are damn dog proof, though!

Becky is right - if you move to LA then you solve the problem of having to move the chairs in. Except sometimes they become homes for spiders.

Oh, wow. Love that. But, yeah, nothing from Ikea is built to last, so you'd better take it in :)

Jamie,

So awesome that you put this up. I still have the December issue of Cottage Living that featured Lee Kleinhelter's 2nd home. The inspiration for my new backyard completely hinges on hardscaping and a firepit just like this! I'm just gonna keep chanting, I can do that, I can do that.

I have those chairs and they would have to be taken in unless they were covered and up on something that wouldn't soak up the moisture.

Being from New England I'm using mine indoors for extra seating. I would highly recommend them though, they are cheap and relatively comfy for short term sitting.

They do stack for storing, if you must do it, which is a plus.

i have been psychotically collecting wicker for our patio for the past few years. i'm lazy and have never covered it OR brought it in and it looks pretty sad now... and i live in san diego where it hardly rains. i just think real wicker, even weathered, is prettier than the plasticky all-weather. if you can find stuff on craigslist for cheap, snag it and you won't feel so bad leaving it out!

Haha.
Just saw this.. Man Sarah showed me that same picture and I'm pretty sure she follows Dan around the house with it trying to sell him on how that can be theirs.
Good Luck to both of you!!
