We have two cats and the only place they're not allowed is anywhere food is prepared/served.
They're family members. Do you make your nieces and nephews sit on the floor? No. So my kitties get to lounge on their favorite chairs and watch birds out the window.
Unfortunately, no, but only because he's huge and usually muddy from runs and romps at the park. Seriously, he's utterly filthy most of the time.
My dearly departed feline was a permanent fixture on the couch, though, and when we dogsit for my SIL's Jack Russell Terrier, he's allowed up on the couch in our laps.
Definitely yes... and I have five big dogs! And I used to be completely uptight about it, worried about always de-furring the sofa before company came over... but now I realize I like my dogs much more than most of my visitors, so I'm much more zen about all the fur floating around the house.
Yes on the couch on his blanket. No on other furniture especially the bed. He is just too dirty and into everything. I don't even let the DH into bed dirty. LOL.

Dogs, Cats, Birds - they're all more welcome on the furniture than most people I know.
